The People’s Majlis is to extend its ongoing session upto December 7.
This was announced by Speaker Mohamed Aslam during Monday’s sitting.
As such, he noted that it has been decided to extend the ongoing third session of the year, until December 7.
The decision to extend the last session of the year comes at a time there are several pending tasks at the parliament, including approving the state budget for 2024.
A total of 51 lawmakers voted in favor of extending the parliament session during Monday’s sitting. Six parliamentarians abstained from the vote and one parliamentarian voted against it.
A majority of the third session of the concluding year was wasted, due to a delay in carrying out the no-confidence motion against former speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed.
This resulted in a major delay in important work such as the appointment of employees to independent institutions, as well as the appointment of ambassadors.
The parliament reconvened after the no-confidence motion against Nasheed was passed and Mohamed Aslam was appointed as the new Speaker of Parliament.
