Investigating MPs for obstruction: Police

No legal grounds to bar MPs from entering Parliament

Several MPs injured

No legal status to remove MPs from Parliament

Maldives Police Service (MPS) said they were investigating several Members of Parliament on charges of obstruction of Police duty.

A statement released by the agency on Monday said that Parliament session for the day was cancelled but that some MPs had crossed the barriers in the guise of entering the Parliament.

Even though the Police had made that claim, the Police have no legal grounds to bar any MPs from entering the Parliament premises or removing said MPs, irrespective whether the Parliament was open or closed.

Additionally, the statement noted that MPs had forcefully entered the Parliament. Eyewitnesses reported that Police officers had allowed some MPs to enter the premises.

Police added that they had entered the premises after the security personnel at the Parliament had appealed for assistance, after some MPs had entered the premises.
