A Pakistani traveller has been caught attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives.

Maldives Customs Service revealed that they confiscated drugs weighing 10 kilograms from the traveller who touched down at Velana International Airport from a flight that arrived from Pakistan’s Faisalabad on Monday.

The suspect has been identified as a 25-year-old man.

Customs officials searched the 25-year-old’s luggage following suspicious behavior and found drugs weighing 10.14kgs, on him. The man’s suspicious behavior prompted airport officials to question him and he was found with drugs carrying a street value of MVR 13 million.

In the first stage of analysis, the drugs are to have tested positive for heroin.

Customs revealed that the passenger as well as the drugs confiscated from his luggage, have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Further investigations are currently underway.
