Maldives-Ghana signs key agreements aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey

The Government of Maldives and the Government of Ghana have signed two key agreements that will further deepen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The agreements were signed at the sidelines of the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting in London, on Tuesday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid signed the agreements on behalf of the Government of Maldives and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey signed the agreements on behalf of the Government of Ghana.

The signing ceremony was held at the Marlborough House in London.

The two agreements signed between the Maldives and Ghana were:

Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of Ghana on Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirements for their Respective Nationals.

Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana on Political Consultation.

The agreements are a step towards closer bilateral exchange between Ghana and Maldives through periodic consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries and increased people-to-people contact facilitated through mutual exemption of visa.

Maldives established diplomatic relations with Ghana on 10 August 1989.
