The long standing electricity issues in Veyvah island of Meemu atoll, have ended with the inauguration of a new powerhouse.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated the new powerhouse in Veyvah island on Sunday, where he arrived as part of his ongoing tour of five islands in Meemu atoll.
The powerhouse and office building were developed by state-owned utilities company, FENAKA Corporation Limited.
Acknowledging FENAKA and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)’s role in developing the nation and realizing the incumbent administration’s "Jazeera Raajje" vision, President Solih assured the island residents that the companies will continue to provide essential services to the people.
With this, the president expressed gratitude to the companies for their commitment and resilience in providing the services..
Noting the public confidence in these companies, President Solih highlighted that most island councils have contracted their development projects to FENAKA and MTCC.
President Solih also announced that FENAKA will be awarded projects to develop ice plants spanning the island nation, during September.
Further, the president assured that his administration gives priority to empowering youth, and stated that the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment will work closely with the Veyvah community to build sports facilities in the island.
He went on to state that the administration provides equal opportunities for all islands, irrespective of their size or population numbers.
A new power house was built in Veyvah, due to the location of the old powerhouse, which was in close proximity of the housing area . There were also complaints of noise pollution from the old powerhouse, which was in use for the past 29 years.
While the generation capacity of the old powerhouse was 368 kilowatts, the new 208 square-meter powerhouse can accommodate three larger generators , and also allow four staff members to work within the premises , and has a capacity of 25 staff.
The new powerhouse has the capacity to generate 448 kilowatts of power and was designed to accommodate three generator sets of 400 kilowatts.
Raiymandhoo was the president’s first destination of the tour, which he began on Saturday morning.
President Solih will be touring five islands of Meemu atoll during the three-day tour. He was last in Muli.
He is accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials.
The President’s Office revealed that during the visits, the president will be inspecting the progress of the ongoing development projects in these islands.
He will also sit down with members of the Meemu Atoll Council, island councils and Women’s Development Committees of the respective islands.
President Solih is expected to return to the capital on Monday, after concluding the tour.
