The incumbent administration is of the people and will serve in their best interest, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
He said this during a ceremony held in Dhiggaru island of Meemu atoll to mark the completion of the island’s coastal protection project.
As such, taking the podium at the event the president noted that his administration will always continue to promote, uphold and serve in the people’s best interests.
Recalling that previous administrations had failed to deliver on their pledges to address the most pressing concerns of island, President Solih highlighted that most pertinent needs of the island residents, were left unfulfilled when he took office.
With this being said, President Solih shed light on the support and cooperation towards his development agenda, extended from local councils and parliamentarians.
The coastal protection project in Dhiggaru saw the development of 700-meter protective rock-boulder seawalls in the areas affected most by storm surges and coastal erosion.
President Solih revealed that the administration will study the efficiency of the defensive structures over the course of the next two to three years and make the necessary changes if required.
Speaking regarding the island’s land reclamation project which will see the reclamation of hectares which will total 38 hectares for the island, the president urged the council to draw up a land-use plan for the island. The administration pledged to reclaim 25 hectares of land of which 17 hectares have been reclaimed.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was contracted both projects, at a value of MVR 121.1 million.
The ceremony also saw President Solih presented with a commemorative model of the island.
Raiymandhoo was the president’s first destination of the tour, which he began on Saturday morning.
President Solih will be touring five islands of Meemu atoll during the three-day tour. He is currently in Dhiggaru. His next destinations are Veyvah and Muli.
He is accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials.
The President’s Office revealed that during the visits, the president will be inspecting the progress of the ongoing development projects in these islands.
President Solih will participate in the ceremony marking the conclusion of the shore protection project in Dhiggaru island, as well as the ceremony to officially inaugurate the harbor and powerhouse in Veyvah island.
He will also sit down with members of the Meemu Atoll Council, island councils and Women’s Development Committees of the respective islands.
President Solih is expected to return to the capital on August 29, after concluding the visit.
