Kondey island in Gaaf Alif atoll saw more progress under the incumbent administration than it had in the past 40 years, says the island council.
Members of the island council made this statement during a meeting with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the President’s Office on Thursday afternoon.
The meeting saw Kondey councilors highlighting that they have seen more development than it had in the past 40 years, during the past years of Solih’s presidency.
Further, they stated that five major projects were completed during the past few years, highlighting that four additional projects are currently underway.
The president was briefed on the island’s development needs including expanding the harbor, improving healthcare services, developing more classrooms at the island school as well as building 50 housing units and improving banking services, at the meeting.
The councilors went on to stress that tourism could be developed further on the island as well as surrounding regions.
Discussions also touched down on ways to enhance the economy of Kondey island.
The meeting also saw the island councilors briefed regarding the latest updates on the ongoing projects on the island.
The president stated that funds have been allocated in the budget for the development of four classrooms, relating to the concerns raised by the councilors.
In addition to this, the president assured Kondey councilors that steps will be taken to address the concerns they raised.
He also assured that the government will provide equal opportunities for all islands, despite their size or population.
