National team player and captain of TC Sports Club, Mohamed Azzam has announced his retirement from football.
31-year-old Azzam’s retirement from football was announced at the closing ceremony of the futsal contest held in Kendhikulhudhoo island in Noonu atoll, in honor of Maldives’ 56th Independence Day.
During his speech, the former captain said that his list of people to express gratitude to was too long, and thanked the residents and supporters in Kendhikulhudhoo 'first and foremost'. He further thanked his family, emphasizing his appreciation for his parents.
Azzam began his career with BG Sports Club, in 2012, remaining in the club till 2014. While he transferred to TC Sports Club in 2015, his talents shone through the most during his time with the club.
Azzam took the club to championship in the 2017 Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup held in 2017. This was the first win achieved by a Maldivian club on an international scale. With Azzam, TC Sports also won the 2018 Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League.
Azzam was also on last year’s national team that played in the AFC Cup.
The former captain of TC club first secured himself a position in Maldives National Football Team in March of 2017, for AFC Asian Cup qualification match against Palestine but was on bench as a substitute.
He made his debut against Oman on 10th of October in 2017, in the AFC Asian Cup qualification match held in 2019. He came in as a substitute for Naiz Hassan at the 70th minute.
In addition to this, Azzam has also won championship in futsal contests aimed for government and office employees, and the Siyaam Mauroof Soccer Cup, in Noonu Atoll.
