Covid-19: Maldives reports 92 new cases, additional death

Maldives reported 92 new coronavirus cases on Friday.

According to the latest daily figures publicized by Health Protection Agency (HPA), the new cases reported, were from over 5,000 samples taken during the collection period from 6pm Thursday to 6pm Friday.

This new development pushes Maldives’ Covid-19 case tally to 76,546. 

Atolls continue to report the highest number of cases; 48 cases were reported from atolls on Friday, whereas 21, 18 and five cases were reported from Male', operational resorts and industrial islands respectively.

The island nations recovery numbers are currently at 73,710, having observed 73 additional recoveries in the last reporting period.

Also, an additional death from Covid-19 was reported on Saturday morning; HPA said that a 60-year-old Maldivian man being treated at the Hulhumale' Medical Facility succumbed to coronavirus complications on Friday night. This pushes the country's Covid-19 death toll to 219.

This is the third death reported this week, and the eighth fatality from Covid-19 confirmed this month. Since the pandemic began, the maximum number of deaths was reported in the month of May this year, with 88 deaths.  50 deaths were recorded in June.

Maldives now has 2,606 active cases, with 11 individuals hospitalized.

The island nation is currently recovering from a fourth wave of Covid-19, which saw a spike of over 1,000 daily cases during April. The outbreak led to another curfew and additional restrictions, which were relaxed in time for the ongoing Eid-al-Adha and Independence Day holidays.

Individuals who completed vaccination are allowed travel islands without the need to quarantine, after providing a negative PCR test result.
