Covid 19: Maldives reports 122 new cases, 106 recoveries

Maldives reported 122 new coronavirus cases on Thursday.

According to Health Protection Agency’s (HPA) daily figures, the new cases were detected from over 6,000 samples taken over the collection period from 6pm Wednesday to 6pm Thursday. Most of the cases, 81, were detected from outlying atolls while 24 were confirmed from the Greater Malé Area and 17 from operational resorts.

With this, the country’s total positive case tally has risen to 76,454.

While there have been an additional 106 recoveries, total number of recoveries observed in the island nation thus far sits at 73,637. Maldives’ Covid-19 fatalities remain at 218. The latest death was reported on Wednesday, when an 82-year-old local man passed at Hulhumalé Medical Facility (HMF). This was the second death reported during the week, with the first one reported on Tuesday; a 91-year-old local woman.

There are currently 2,587 active cases across the country, with 11 patients hospitalized for treatment.

Maldives is currently recovering from it’s fourth wave of Covid-19, which saw a spike of over 1,000 daily cases during April. The outbreak led to another curfew and additional restrictions, which were eased in time for the ongoing Eid-al-Adha and Independence Day holidays.

Fully vaccinated individuals are now allowed travel between islands without the need to quarantine, after providing a negative PCR test result.

Maldives remains in a state of public health emergency since 12 March 2020 which was last extended to expire on 2 August.
