Police will be conducting special operation in capital Male' City to reduce crime during the long holiday.

While government offices are to be closed from 18 July till the end of the month for Eid-al-Adha and Independence Day holidays, small crimes are expected to surge during the holidays.

The police stated that the operations include being more alert in certain places during specific times of the day when and where crimes are most common. Furthermore, they stated that more officers will be stationed near restaurants, offices and shops past midnight as theft is very frequent these days.

Police also plan on increasing security to prevent theft and shared that they have already begun patrolling the streets and checking on families and individuals who live alone to make sure they are safe and secure.

The institution highlighted that it has been brought to the attention of boat owners that preventive measures will be taken in order to prevent theft of goods being transported.

Furthermore, it has been declared that traffic police will be more active near the Sinemale’ Bridge and the zebra crosses near parking zones. In addition, the traffic police are working on easing difficulties that may be produced for citizens due to parking violations.

Police also intend to put a stop to crimes committed against foreigners who work at construction sites.

The police further declared that marine officers would be on high alert at seas as increased travels are expected to islands and atolls during the holiday. They also stated that they are in close contact with sea men to ensure that all safety precautions are being taken.

The police have received complains about passengers leaving their belongings in taxis and advice citizens to be more careful so that robbery can be avoided. They further advice that those who leave their homes, must make sure to turn off the gas and water as they have had incidents where things have gotten out of hand. They then stressed, that offices, restaurants and shops deposit large amounts of money instead of keeping it. In addition, the public has been advised to take extra precaution when going swimming, especially with children.

Police instructed that citizen do not leave their keys in a place it can easily be found when going out of town and to close all windows or points of entry that a thief could enter through. Additionally, they urged citizen to be cautious of fraudulent phone calls offering gifts and promotions.
