The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed the death of a Chinese woman found in the waters near Gulhifalhu.
On Friday, the police institution identified the deceased as Cheng Jia, 38, a Chinese national.
According to the police, the woman fell into the water around 12:48pm on December 18 while attempting to transfer from a barge anchored outside Hulhumalé to a speedboat. Efforts to rescue her were made by individuals on the speedboat after she fell.
However, police noted that while the woman was initially seen in the water, she soon disappeared. As a result, other launches in the area were alerted to assist with the search, and the incident was reported to the Coast Guard.
The woman's body was found at 1:32pm on December 18 during the search operation conducted by the Coast Guard.
The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
