A 92-year-old local man has been declared the 194th Covid-19 victim in the Maldives.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reported his death at around 9:41pm, citing doctors at the Laamu atoll Covid Management Facility to have declared the Covid-19 patient dead at 10:54am on Saturday. This makes him the third Covid-19 fatality reported on Saturday.
On Saturday evening the public health authority reported the first maternal death linked to Covid-19. The victim was aged 25 and had on ventilator support on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital for 15 days before her demise.
Her newborn is currently being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and reportedly doing well. The 25-year-old was transferred to the capital for treatment following health deterioration on May 27. The woman was the 195th Covid-19 victim in Maldives.
On Saturday morning the public health authority confirmed the 193rd Covid-19 fatality, when an 84-year-old Maldivian woman passed away while receiving treatment at Hulhumalé Medical Facility.
The coronavirus pandemic has claimed 195 lives in Maldives, including 146 in 2021 alone.
Maldives reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 34 deaths have been reported in June thus far.
With daily Covid-19 cases soaring above 1,000 into the beginning of May, authorities responded by strengthening Covid-19 precautionary measures and guidelines in place. Since then cases have been declining gradually with less than 300 new cases reported the last two days.
