Spike in diarrhea and vomiting cases hits GMR

According to the health ministry, there has been an increase in the number of reported cases of communicable diseases

According to the Ministry of Health, the Greater Malé Region (GMR) has reported the highest number of diarrhea and vomiting cases across the Maldives during this period.

On Wednesday, the health ministry released statistics on the number of reported cases of diarrhea and vomiting from June 15 to July 5.

Accordingly, compared to previous weeks, the ministry has noted an increase in the number of reported cases of diarrhea and vomiting in the past week. During this period, a total of 3,763 cases of diarrhea and vomiting have been reported from across the Maldives.

According to the health ministry’s statistics, they noted that during this period, the highest number of diarrhea and vomiting cases have been reported from Greater Malé Region. As such, the total number of reported cases of diarrhea and vomiting from Greater Malé Region alone during this period has reached 2,370.

In addition to this, the Health Ministry has also released the number of reported influenza cases, with 239 cases of influenza reported during this period.

The ministry stated that the highest number of influenza cases during this period have been reported from Greater Malé Region. As such, 228 cases of influenza have been reported from Greater Malé Region.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to practice frequent handwashing with soap, cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and if a tissue is unavailable, to use their elbow as a cover to prevent the spread of germs.

The public health authority has also advised individuals experiencing fever and cough to avoid crowded places to help prevent the spread of illness.
