Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) hosted a press conference on Thursday night, detailing inquiry efforts on behalf of the party in the terror attack which targeted party leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed.
During the press conference, MDP Chairperson and MP for West-Henveiru constituency Hassan Latheef stated that the inquiry being conducted by the Committee on National Security Services into a potential security breach leading up to the attack would conclude on 30 June. Chairperson Hassan Latheef asserted that it was one of MDP's top priorities to closely oversee investigations into the attempt on Speaker Nasheed's life, and to pursue points of concern in the investigation through official channels.
MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef also stated that MDP was working through established frameworks to conduct the most robust inquiry possible into whether or not a security breach had facilitated the attack against Speaker Nasheed. MP Hassan Latheef also revealed that Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed had agreed to share progress into the investigation direcly with former president Nasheed, and that the party would be observing that process closely as well.
When prompted by a question, MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef declined to comment on rumors of no-confidence in Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, and reiterated that the 241 Committee's inquiry into a potential security breach will conclude by 30 June.
During the press conference, MDP Spokesperson and MP for North-Maafannu constituency Imthiyaz Fahmy stated that the biggest two events for MDP would always be the overthrowal of former president Nasheed's government, and the terror attack which had recently placed the Speaker's life in danger.
Vice-President of MDP and Minister at the President's Office Mohamed Shifaz stated that while there were other concerning deaths being reported in the wake of the attack against former president Nasheed, investigative bodies would need to take that into consideration moving forward. He added that it was a point of concern that an attempt had been made on Speaker Nasheed's life so soon after he had publicly pushed for a transparent investigation into the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) corruption case.
MDP Chairperson and MP for West-Henveiru constituency Hassan Latheef asserted that MDP was closely following investigations into the attack against former president Nasheed, as it had proved to be a divisive issue inside MDP, and had brought about doubt and suspicions from all sides as to who was responsible for the explosion, which had left former president Nasheed severely wounded and four others injured on 6 May 2021.
