Maldives Covid-19 death toll has risen to 118, with seven deaths reported over the past 48 hours.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) continues to report alarming numbers of Covid-19 fatalities across the Maldives, as the country struggles to control a devastating surge in daily infections being reported over recent weeks.

HPA reported the 112th Covid-19 victim on Wednesday afternoon, when a 62-year-old Maldivian woman succumbed to complications at around 12:16pm after being brought to the Emergency Room of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

On Thursday a 36-year-old man native to Nepal passed away at 2am while receiving treatment for Covid-19 at the Laamu Covid Management Facility. He was declared the 113th victim of the virus.

The same day HPA reported the 114th Covid-19 fatality when a 62-year-old Maldivian man died at 6:52pm on Thursday after being brought to the Emergency Room of ADK Hospital.

A few hours later another Maldivian man aged 72, passed away while receiving treatment at Hulhumalé Medical Facility, at 9pm. This was declared the 115th Covid-19 fatality.

Two more deaths were reported from Hulhumalé Medical Facility after that, when a 77-year-old local man and an 80-year-old local woman succumbed to Covid-19 complications. The man died early Friday at 4:06am, making him the 117th Covid-19 victim. The woman died at 10:54am on Friday and is the 118th victim of the coronavirus infection.

Maldives is currently experiencing a devastating Covid-19 peak like never observed before, with daily infections soaring above 1,000 over recent days.

The pandemic has claimed 69 lives in the Maldives during 2021, 45 of which have been reported thus far in May. This is the highest number of deaths to have been reported in a month since the pandemic began sweeping across the island nation on 7 March 2020.

Authorities earlier stressed that Covid-19 fatalities had doubled in count since January 2021. As such, while four deaths were observed in January, the number increased to 10 during February. Six Covid-19 fatalities were reported during March as well as April.

With an alarming spike in case count over the past few days, hospitalizations are also increasing in comparison to the past month. Currently there are 280 Covid-19 patients hospitalized for treatment. There has been increasing concern over hospital beds filling up across the Maldives capital, hit hardest by the pandemic.

Maldives active Covid-19 tally is currently over 20,000 with the country’s total case count exceeding the 50,000-mark. Authorities have imposed strict measures in the capital region as well as in outlying atolls in light of the spiking cases. As such, a 12-hour curfew is effective in Maldives capital from 4pm to 4am in authorities' efforts to slow the spread of the deadly infection.
