Security levels inside and near the People’s Majlis building have been strengthened following intel reports of a security threat to parliament.
Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Major Ibrahim Azim revealed that authorities received information of a threat to the parliament, which provoked the strengthened security near the region.
The second session of the ongoing year began on Monday, and armed officers of MNDF are currently active in the region. The region has also been cordoned off.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has also launched investigations into a comment by a Maldivian on RaajjeTV’s Facebook live, who asserted that the People’s Majlis building needs to be blown up.
MNDF was alerted on the threat made on social media, on Monday night, Azim said.
This comes at a time the parliament is deliberating on an emergency motion regarding the assassination attempt on Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s life on May 6.
Following the attack MNDF’s armed presence continues throughout the country and that they have boosted security measures nationwide as well.
Nasheed underwent a 16-hour procedure to remove shrapnel lodged inside his body in the IED explosion denotated near his residence as he was heading out to attend an event on an island. The IED was strapped to a blue motorcycle and denoted right before Nasheed stepped inside his car. His security personnel were quick to respond and transported the injured former president to ADK Hospital within seven minutes.
MNDF officers as well as Nasheed’s security personnel attained several injuries due to the explosion as well.
Three suspects were arrested soon after the attack, with one of them being the prime suspect believed to be seen in CCTV footage showing an individual detonating the device and running off.
The suspects have since been remanded by 15 days and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has given his assurance that perpetrators in the attack on Nasheed’s life will be brought to justice as thorough investigations conclude.
