Maldives Police Service has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection to the terrorist attack on Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

The police institution revealed this via a Twitter post on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier police revealed that they are investigating Thursday evening's explosion attack as an act of terrorism, as an “urgent” priority.

Currently MPS is utilizing all the necessary resources available for investigation and forensic teams in the probe.

It was also revealed that two experts from the Australian Federal Police would be arriving in the Maldives on Saturday to join the probe, which has been joined by two UNODC technical experts from the UK in the Maldives as well.

Police have urged the public to contact them through 9704000 if they have any information regarding the explosion or suspicious activity in the region at the time of the incident. MPS revealed that the anonymity of the individuals who report to them will be maintained.

During a press briefing on Friday night the Chief of Defense Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal revealed that a remote-controlled IED was used to target the former president’s life.

Nasheed is currently in stable condition and out of life support after having undergone four successful surgeries due to injuries attained in the blast. ADK Hospital revealed that a specialty team of doctors has been attending to the former president since he was rushed to the hospital.
