Another dangerous accident has occurred within the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) yard early Friday, leaving a 28-year-old man seriously injured and in hospital.
MPL has confirmed that the accident took place early in the morning on Friday, while Mina Investment Clearance Group was handling a shipment of goods within the MPL area.
A 28-year-old man was left with serious injuries in the accident after a roll of carpet fell on top of him, following which he was rushed into emergency at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
A media official for IGMH has confirmed to Raajje MV that the 28-year-old youth taken to the hospital on Friday is in serious condition, and that they would be able to share more information once he was discharged from the theatre.
MPL has since provided details for how the accident occured, revealing that Mina Investment Clearance Group had been handling a shipment of goods within the MPL yard at the time of the accident on Friday. A roll of carpet had become unbalanced, falling while being transferred to a lorry via crane. The roll of carpet then landed on the 28-year-old worker, leaving him with serious injuries. MPL stressed that individuals are not allowed in the area when such operations are being conducted.
MPL has established health and safety protocols for those operating within the MPL yard, with groups and companies handling goods within MPL made aware after the fact and encouraged strongly to follow them.
While Friday morning's incident leaves a 28-year-old youth in serious condition, last January saw a similar accident within the MPL yard lead to the death of 27-year-old Abdulla Asim. Asim sustained severe injuries from a falling glass palette inside the MPL area on 7 January, and succumbed to his injuries while in hospital on 16 January.
