A Covid-19 vaccination programme have been launched in three areas of the country, with the first Covishield vaccine doses being administered to persons in central Male' City, Addu City in the south of the country, and Kulhudhuffushi island in the north, on Monday.

Dr. Shiraanee Abdul Raheem, medical officer at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) was the first person to receive the Covishield vaccine in the Maldives, on Monday morning.

In addition to doctors, nurses, elderly persons and those with chronic health conditions or considered high-risk for Covid-19 complications, teachers, police and MNDF personnel are to receive the vaccines in the coming months as well, along with those providing services for travelers to the Maldives at the front line.

The Immunization Station in Male' has been established at Social Center in the Maafannu ward of the city, where vaccination efforts are currently underway.
