Maldives reported its highest daily rise in coronavirus infections in weeks, on Saturday, including 41 from resorts.

87 new cases were reported on Saturday; in addition to the 41 cases from resorts, 30 of the cases were confirmed from the greater Male’ region, 13 from residential islands and three from live-aboard vessels.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that 32 of the cases confirmed from resorts on Saturday are from Olhuveli Beach and Spa Maldives, adding that all are staff members at the resort.

With the cases announced on Saturday, Maldives Covid-19 tally has risen to 14,462.

In addition to this, 31 additional recoveries observed over 24 hours have pushed the total number of recoveries in the island nation to 13,505.

Active coronavirus cases currently soar above 900, with 901 active cases out of which 68 patients are currently hospitalized for treatment and 152 patients moved to isolation facilities.

Healthcare officials in the Maldives have collected a total of 361,891 samples for coronavirus testing, thus far.

The country’s mortality rate is at 0.34 percent with 49 deaths.

A majority of the infections confirmed in the island nation are contributed by Maldivians at 62.71 percent, with 9,069 locals having tested positive thus far.

In addition, 3,434 Bangladeshis, 851 nationals from India, 383 Sri Lankan Nationals and 167 nationals from Nepal have also tested positive for the pandemic.

The Covid-19 tally includes 68 Russian nationals who tested positive since arriving in Maldives, 49 nationals from the United Kingdom as well as 441 others.

Over the course of the past week, Maldives reported a total of 397 new Covid-19 infections out of the 22,325 samples tested from Sunday to Saturday.

As such, the lowest daily rise in cases was reported on Sunday, when 44 cases were confirmed. Saturday’s cases are the highest to have been recorded in weeks.

Maldives responded to the discovery of the first case of community transmission in the country’s populous capital by implementing a full lockdown across the region and a partial lockdown across parts of the country. Proven to be effective, the lockdown was being lifted in phases since late May. Upon entering the third phase of the lockdown ease plan, daily infections began spiraling once more. However, authorities were quick to implement additional measures, following which cases began gradually decreasing once more.

However, cases have been on the rise in the past few days.

Saturday’s cases include five children under the age of 10, one individual from Zimbabwe, one individual from Brazil, one individual from Kazakhstan as well as one Vietnamese national. It also included a Russian man, 27 Bangladeshi men, four Sri Lankan men, a Sri Lankan woman, as well as a man from Jordan.

Five nationals from India, one Pakistani national, three filipino nationals and 40 locals also contracted the virus over the past 24 hours.
