The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) has announced the decision to fly the country's judiciary flag at half-mast, following the death of former Supreme Court Justice, Mujthaz Fahmy.
DJA revealed that the flag will be flown half mast from Thursday, for a three-day period, the entire sector has come together to bid condolences to the bereaved family.
The ex-justice passed away aged 60, early Thursday at around 2am, from Covid-19 complications.
Mujthaz was first admitted at Laamu Gan Hospital on January 3 after testing positive for the virus, and was transferred to the specialty care at Dharumavantha Hospital in the capital on Wednesday following complications.
An official at the hospital told RaajjeMV that Mujthaz’s condition worsened on Tuesday night after which he was put on ventilator support and immediately transferred to Dharumavantha.
Highlighting that the demise of the former SC justice brought immense sorrow to the entire nation and the judicial sector, DJA noted that he has left behind services that will be remembered and celebrated by generations to come.
Born on 21 January 1960, Mujthaz completed his studies in the judicial sector through a training programme in the Maldives. He also undertook several training programmes abroad as well.
The justice served as a judge at the Kunahandhoo Court from 1981 – 1988, as an assistant judge at Court 3 from 1988 – 1990, as a judge at the same court from 1990 – 1992 as well as a judge at Court 2 from 1992 – 1997.
He served several other top-ranking positions including the Judicial Service Commission, Judicial Council as well as the Land Aviation Committee.
Additionally, Mujthaz served as a justice at the Supreme Court from 18 September 2008 – 10 August 2010.
He is the eldest brother of MP for North-Maafannu constituency, Imthiyaz Fahmy.
