Dr M. Munir A. Safieldin, the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) Resident Representative to Maldives has commended Maldives First Lady Fazna Ahmed for her exemplary performance as an Advocate for Children’s Rights at UNICEF.
Safieldin paid a farewell call on the first lady on Tuesday at the official presidential residence, Mulee’aage.
Discussions held during the call revolved around collaborative efforts by UNICEF and the government of Maldives to safeguard children’s’ rights.
The pair also discussed enhancing ongoing programmes targeted towards promoting the rights and freedom of young women.
Extending her appreciation to Safieldin for his passion and dedication during his tenure as the Resident Representative of UNICEF to Maldives, the Maldives First Lady expressed honor in having been chosen to represent UNICEF as an Advocate for child rights.
Safieldin praised Fazna for her exemplary performance as the UNICEF Advocate and acknowledged the significance of her role in UNICEF’s work, especially the leadership she showed during the Covid-19 lockdown.
He shed light on the changes to the Juvenile Justice system and her tireless work in collaboration with the government, towards improving the condition of juvenile detention facilities.
During the call, Safieldin recommended programmes to increase stakeholder engagement towards protecting child rights and expressed gratitude to Fazna for her commitment to children’s rights.
Further, the First Lady noted key projects and amendments including policy-level amendments and those aimed at individuals under state care, protecting children in the island nation all forms of abuse as well as raising awareness on said issues.
Fazna also acknowledged that there is room for improvement in the programmes and stated that broader community engagement is important for the cause.
Safieldin was thanked by the First Lady, who wished him success in his future endeavors and expressed interest to work closely with his successor to progress in efforts to safeguard children’s rights in Maldives.
