Musicians’ Union of Maldives elected its executive committee at its first annual general meeting on Saturday.
While the meeting was held virtually, the Union said that the turn out met the required quorum of 25 percent of regular members, allowing them to hold the vote to elect the executive committee members.
The vote was held via the online anonymous poll voting system, with Ibrahim Waheed elected as the president and Mahran Mohamed Majid as his vice.
Other members elected to the executive committee are: Ahmed Aimon Latheef as treasurer, Ibrahim Hamza Khaleel as secretary general, Mihrah Muhaimin as event coordinator, Aminath Shua Shuaju Hannan as spokesperson and Afaneen Nafil as associate officer.
Following the election of the executive committee, founding members Nishfa Nashid and Ahmed Shiham have begun the handover process.
However, the Musicians’ Union assured that the founding members “will still remain in the loop and ready to lend a hand should the EXCO require it”.
The Musicians’ Union of Maldives was officially registered as an NGO this July, triggered by the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on local musicians.
The Union was established with the goal to empower locals who are employed in all aspects of the music industry and represents formally employed and self-employed individuals in the field once they become official members.
Further, the MU aims to advocate for the increase in overall employment and income of local musicians, as well as offer advice, support and legal assistance catered to each individual member through their endeavors.
