The doctor who attended to Mohamed Anas’ body, testified at his murder trial on Monday.
Criminal Court held a hearing in Anas’ murder trial on Monday morning, where Dr. Ibrahim Moomin took the witness stand.
While Dr. Moomin had attended to Anas’ body when brought to ADK Hospital, he was called to testify for an “expert opinion”. Both the prosecution and defence were given the opportunity to question the witness.
Moomin, still employed at ADK, said that ER doctors had attempted to save Anas’ life, despite no heartbeat.
The doctor said that they could see multiple stab wounds on the body, adding that all details have been include in the medico-legal report submitted to court.
Noting that he had over 24 stab wounds, Moomin stressed that there were fatal ones were to his neck and chest.
Responding to a question by prosecutors, Dr. Moomin said that Anas died due to loss of blood.
The doctor said that Anas was dead before arrival at hospital, when responding to a question by the defence, as well as that some of the stab wounds had penetrated his lungs.
Citing his experience in the field, Dr. Moomin reiterated that Anas died due to the injuries sustained.
While the murder trial had been halted since February, the presiding judge, at Monday’s hearing, announced intent to hold next hearing as early as November 5.
The last hearing was held on February 13, but was “postponed” after the defence claimed to not have received case documents.
Anas was stabbed to death by a group of masked assailants on 31 July 2017. CCTV footage shows him running into Litus Service Center in an attempt to flee his attackers; the brutal attack took place inside the garage and was caught on video as well.
The state pressed charges against seven suspects; Ahmed Zayan, Usman Shareef and Afrah Abdul Razzaq have been charged with first-degree murder while Junaih Abdulla, Hassan Mahfooz, Mohamed Shaaz and Simah Moosa are charged with accessory to murder.
All seven have pleaded “not guilty”.
