Sunday’s hearing in the appeal case of Ziyadha Naeem's death has been cancelled.
While the hearing was scheduled for 1:30pm, the High Court said that hearing was cancelled as the suspect, Ziyadha’s former husband Ibrahim Shah who was charged with the death of his wife in December 2015, is under Covid-19 quarantine.
It is not clear why he is quarantine; those that travel to outlying islands from the capital are required to, as well as contacts of confirmed cases and those exhibiting symptoms.
Shah, 40, from GDh.Thinadhoo had four charges raised against him including marital rape, a reckless act leading to the death of a person, and negligence – leading to the death of a person as well as the possession of pornographic material.
Police had disclosed that their investigation of Ziyadha's case found evidence of physical and sexual assault which was corroborated by her autopsy report.
While the trial began in 2016, Criminal Court acquitted Shah on all charges last year, leading to public criticism towards the Criminal Court and the country's judicial system.
The lower court’s ruling was appealed at the High Court shortly after.
