President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday signed the two books of condolences opened in the memory of late parliamentarian, Hussain Mohamed.

Hussain passed away last Thursday while receiving treatment at Tree Top Hospital.

While one book is placed at the People’s Majlis and the other the offices of the Public Service Media (PSM), President Solih visited both locations on Sunday, and Vice President Faisal Naseem accompanied him to the latter.

While late Hussain Mohamed served three consecutive terms as a lawmaker, the book of condolences at the People’s Majlis was opened on Sunday and will remain there for a week. Sunday’s parliament sitting also started with a moment of silence, in honour of the late parliamentarian.

Hussain joined politics after 30 years as a journalist and researcher; he started his career in journalism in 1980, and filled various senior roles at the state-run PSM including as deputy director, director of programmes, director general and executive director.

Hussain Mohamed also had a government career spanning over 28 years, during which he served in several senior capacities, including as the Director General, Deputy Director General, Assistant Executive Director and Executive Director of Television Maldives.

The president expressed great sorrow following the passing of Hussain, whom he described as a dear friend and confidant.

Prior to being elected president in 2018, Solih served in the People’s Majlis for 25 consecutive years, and had worked closely with Hussain.
