Maldives Covid-19 case count has reached 8,584.

The country’s health authorities reported 98 more infections by 6pm Sunday, out of which 87 were reported from the Greater Malé Region and 11 from residential islands.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the new cases include mostly Maldivians, 72 and 26 foreigners.

With 114 additional recoveries from the virus over the last 24 hours, the country’s recovery total has neared 6,000, at 5,936.

This has pushed the country’s active cases to 2,613 out of which 1,143 patients are seeking treatment from isolation facilities whereas 147 patients are hospitalized for further treatment, 21 less than the previous day, where 168 patients were hospitalized.

Authorities also identified local transmissions of the virus in a number of islands since the outbreak began worsening after authorities entered the third phase of lockdown easing. As such, there are currently 8 active cases in 35 inhabited islands out of which 89 are locals and nine are foreigners.

Active cases in resorts include 19 tourists and 47 staff members.

Islands currently under monitoring are Madaveli island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll and Hoandedhdhoo, where 25 cases have been confirmed. The second highest number of cases in a residential island is Miladhoo island in Noonu atoll, where 11 coronavirus cases have been confirmed.

While authorities have claimed that they will be forced to implement a second lockdown if the Covid-19 level reaches “10”, the country is currently in the ninth level and over 900 cases of the virus were informed over the past week alone.

The highest daily rise in cases was reported on September 1 in the last week, where 199 cases were confirmed.

Maldives capital Malé City remains the epicenter of the pandemic, contributing to over 90 percent of the infection, which has taken 29 lives in the country thus far.
