The Elections Commission (EC) has warned action against political parties found to be in violation of the country’s laws and regulations.
EC’s Vice President, Ahmed Akram said that the commission will not hesitate to take action against such parties ‘despite the intimidation.’
Akram via Twitter revealed that commission members have been facing various forms of intimidation.
Noting the importance of political activities in ensuing government accountability, EC in a statement released last week said that such activities must be held in accordance with the constitution, as well as the country’s laws, regulations and guidelines.
While EC has warned action against any party found in violation of these “without any exemptions,” this led to criticism from the opposition.
EC’s statement comes shortly after the opposition announced a series of protests in the capital, where there has recently been a surge in Covid-19 cases detected, demanding the release of their leader and former President, Abdulla Yameen.
Yameen is serving a five-year jail sentence after being found guilty of money laundering, last November.
A protest was held on Friday, where a number of participants were seen violating the guidelines issued by Health Protection Agency (HPA). As such, some participants were not wearing face masks, which is mandatory in public spaces, including former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed.
While Maldives is in third phase of the lockdown ease plan, public gatherings of more than 30 are still not allowed.
