High Court chief judge resigns amid dismissal motion

Chief Judge at the High Court, Shujau Usman has resigned amid a dismissal motion at the People’s Majlis.

While the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) suspended him for a 60-day period last month, it has since decided to seek his dismissal through parliament, who, on Monday began the work.

As such, the matter was forwarded to its judiciary committee for further review on Monday.

Usman is accused of campaigning in the 2018 presidential elections including in taking part in campaign trips. During such a trip to Gemanafushi island in Gaafu Alif atoll, he is to have met with the family of a detainee and assured them of his release given that they vote for a certain candidate.

Usman was given seven days to send in a written response to the allegations against him.

In a statement released not long after the motion was forwarded to the committee, Usman claimed that dismissal of judges have become “a political game.”

Usman, who has a Master’s Degree in Sharia, was appointed as the head judge of the High Court by the previous administration, in August 2018.
