Health officials have appealed to the public to stay home unless absolutely necessary

Over 1,000 individuals have been fined for violating Covid-19 safety measures.

Chief Inspector of Police, Abdul Matheen, announced this during Saturday night’s Covid-19 press briefing.

He said that action have been taken against a total of 1,118 individuals since August 1, for violating precautionary measures.

As such, Matheen said that a total of 591 individuals have been fined for not wearing face masks in public, while 527 were fined for breaching curfew order.

Further, 3,415 individuals were let go with warnings.

Authorities were forced to reintroduce a curfew in the capital as the country saw a surge in Covid-19 cases after entering the third phase on lockdown easing in July. Officials said that this was done so as to avoid returning to a state of lockdown. Further, masks were made mandatory from August 1, as part of the measures to control the spread of Covid-19.

While the country had less than 1,000 active Covid-19 cases when it entered the third phase, this has since risen to 2,449. Maldives has confirmed a total of 5,679 Covid-19 cases since March, while 3,208 patients have recovered.
