Cargo ferry services to be launched between Maldives and India
Sea links between the countries are described as means to enhance trade and commerce

Cargo ferry services are to be launched between Maldives and India.

The announcement was made during a digital video conference held between Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and Minister of External Affairs of India Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Thursday, where a number of significant decisions on several initiatives were made.

Reflecting on the sea links between the countries described as means to enhance trade and commerce, both ministers also welcomed the announcement that the cargo ferry service between Cochin, Kulhudhuffushi City-Malé.

The operation of ferry services between Cochin and Kulhudhuffushi City as well as the capital will begin within the next few months.

The operation of ferry services is expected to further strengthen trade, especially in the north.

Discussions to begin operating cargo ferries between Maldives and India were held during the tenure of ex-President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed as well.

Further, the decision to establish an Air Bubble between Maldives and India was also reached during the meeting.

Once established, it will be the first of its kind in South Asia and regular scheduled flights will commence between the two countries. This will enable a boost in the traditionally strong people-to-people contact.

FM Shahid expressed gratitude to the neighboring nation for including Maldives among the first countries with which India has established an Air Bubble, having shed light on the importance of easing travel, especially for Maldivians seeking advanced medical treatment from India as well as tourists from India, keen on visiting Maldives.

Minister Jaishankar also confirmed the renewal of the quotas for the import of essential commodities from India to the Maldives. Jaishankar noted that the quota approved is larger than the amount approved last year, which he hoped would help ensure predictability of imports during this difficult time.

Maldives and India will celebrate 55 years since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties on November 1.
