United State of America has donated Personal Protective Equipment to support Covid-19 frontline responders in the Maldives.

The PPE, worth USD 150,000, was handed over to Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Omar Razak, on Wednesday.

While this is the US’ third donation of PPE to the island nation, it is representative of its “All of America” approach to combating Covid-19 worldwide.

Deputy Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Martin Kelly stated that the United States “is proud to provide protection for Maldivian healthcare workers as they care for Maldivians suffering from COVID-19”.

He added that the equipment “will help prevent the spread of the virus and keep frontline responders safe”.

High Commissioner Razak expressed gratitude to the U.S. government and people “for the generosity and continued assistance to Maldives to combat Covid-19”

United States donated PPE worth USD 78,000 in late June as well.

In addition to PPE, the country is funding a USD two million tailored package of support for Maldives that includes ‘helping civil society expand Covid-19-related social protection services, advocate effectively for COVID recovery policies, and provide technical assistance to the government to develop effective economic measures in response to the pandemic’.

Maldives has been receiving numerous donations in support of their frontline Covid-19 response efforts since the battle against the pandemic began in the island nation, in early March.
