A group of expatriate workers in a resort being developed in Vaavu atoll, created unrest on Monday night.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that a group of expatriate workers on the island, being developed as a resort, had taken to the streets and gotten in the way of work, having churned unrest.

However, police did not disclose further details including which island the unrest took place in.

Police officers were dispatched to the island following the reports, and authorities have since reported that no injuries were caused due to the unrest.

Expatriate workers involved in the unrest had damaged their supervisor’s room, on the island.

Further, discussions are underway with sponsors to resolve the issues facing the expatriate workers.

Police did not reveal whether the issue has been solved, or not.

This comes at a time hordes of expatriate workers have been taking to the streets of recent, in protest of unpaid wages.

The issue of long-drawn-out delay in settling wages of expatriate workers even caused a group of them to take 13 Maldivian workers in Bodufinolhu island, as hostages earlier. The island is being developed as a resort as well and over 200 expatriate workers took part in the protest, that escalated leading to some police officers who attempted to enter the island, being injured after getting struck by rocks and metal rods the expatriate workers armed themselves with, after securing the island.
