President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), Bassam Adeel Jaleel has denied any corruption within the institution.

He denied this during a meeting of the parliament’s committee on social affairs, on Wednesday.

While the People’s Majlis has accepted an emergency motion related to the football association, the social affairs committee is reviewing the matter. The motion, submitted by South-Henveiru constituency MP Ali Azim, seeks legal action against FAM.

During Wednesday’s meeting, the FAM president categorically denied the corruption allegations within the association, adding that it has been acting as per laws and regulations.

“I give full assurance that there are no corrupt practices within the association. Three parties conduct our audits every year. FIA audits us, AFC audits us, as well as auditors appointed by us”
Bassam Adeel Jaleel

He added that the audit reports are submitted to member clubs, as well as the sports commission.

Further claiming that he will not allow such unlawful practices within FAM, Bassam assured that the association “will always follow FIFA and AFC regulations, as well as the country’s laws and regulations”.

While Bassam has decided to cooperate with parliament as its reviews the emergency motion against FAM, he previously said that he does not believe that the People’s Majlis can intervene in the association’s work. The decision to cooperate is as per FAM’s regulations.

Bassam was reelected as FAM president for a second term last Thursday.
