201 individuals breached the lockdown order across the Greater Malé Region on Monday.
In a daily publication to the media on Tuesday, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that officers patrolling the region had taken 11 individuals under their custody and imposed fines on 190 individuals on Monday.
Authorities began implementing the lockdown ease plan on May 29 and it is currently in the first phase, where a number of restrictions are still in place, such as restricting individuals from going out without authorization from the authority.
As such, 190 individuals were fined for violating this order on Monday; 173 were in Malé, seven from Hulhumalé and 10 from Villimalé.
With this, the total number of individuals slapped with fines for violating orders sits at 8,376, pushing the amount to over MVR eight million. Out of the total, 7,473 were in Malé, 772 from Hulhumalé and 131 were fined from Villimalé.
Out of the 11 arrested on Monday, nine were from Malé and two from Hulhumalé.
The authority’s statistics go on to reveal that a total of 565 have been arrested thus far for violating the lockdown order, out of which 517 are from Malé, 45 are from Hulhumalé and three are from Villimalé.
Under the orders of the Director General of Public Health, first time violators of the lockdown will be fined MVR 1,000 fines and repeat offenders will be arrested under Article 533 (a) of the Penal Code.
Since the Maldives capital Malé City was locked down on April 15 following the detection of the first ever Covid-19 community transmission, police had been issuing daily permits for individuals to go out for essential supplies. Authorities continue to issue permits, to three individuals from each households, even now.
