Maldives has confirmed a fifth Covid-19 related death.

The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) revealed this at Tuesday night’s Covid-19 press briefing, adding that the deceased is a Bangladeshi national.

NEOC spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Aziz said that the individual was taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) at around 10:45pm on Monday after he was found lying unconsciousness on the road.

Noting that he was pronounced dead on arrival hospital, Mabrook stressed that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

While the case is being investigated, the spokesperson said that the Bangladeshi was “a heart patient”.

It was further revealed that the deceased had not gone to work for about two months, after telling his employer that this health condition made it difficult to continue with work back in March. Mabrook also said that he had intended to travel back home.

While contact tracing is underway, four contacts have been identified thus far.
