Heavy rain showers in the south have caused floods in Addu City.

The southernmost city’s Mayor, Abdulla Sodiq told RaajjeMV that the city has been experiencing heavy rain showers continuously since Wednesday night.

Due to this, the streets of the city have been flooding and the flood water has been entering households. This caused damage to some household property as well, said the mayor.

Further, it has also been revealed that relevant stakeholders along with officers from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) are working to drain the flood water using pumps and they are also active in placing sandbags at the entrances of households to block the flood water from entering.

This comes at a time the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) issued a yellow alert from Laamu atoll to the southernmost city on Thursday morning.

The department has predicted the regions between these atolls to experience torrential rain showers and thunderstorms.
