Covid-19: Economic Affairs committee to question three ministries
 
The meeting was held via video conference on Saturday
 
The questioning is part of their work to review the motion seeking to amend the government's economic stimulus package.
 
The committee is tasked with probing into 17 matters.

In connection to the impact of Covid-19 measures, the parliament's Economic Affairs Committee has determined to question the Ministry of Fisheries Marine Resources and Agriculture, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Economic Development as well as State Trading Organisation (STO).

The decision was unanimously agreed upon during a committee meeting held via video conference on Saturday.

This is part of the committee's work to review the parliamentary motion seeking to amend the government's economic stimulus package.

The committee is tasked with probing into 17 matters.

Matters being probed by the committee include:

  • Inquire about MIFCO's work to increase their freezing and storage capacity up to 605 tonnes as well as work to create value-added products
  • Inquire into work being done to establish the Koodoo cannery
  • Research the economic impact of Covid-19 on the fishing industry
  • Inquire into work being done to establish fish canning factories on inhabited islands
  • Research into the economic impact of Covid-19 in the Maldives as well as the measures taken to mitigate said impact and making recommendations to the relevant ministries
  • Gather all types of Maldivian professionals, create different types of platforms for discussions and give capable youth a platform to share ideas via a think tank
  • Review the economic activities of SME's and the tourism industry without interruption

The committee has also determined to establish a sub-committee to review these matters
