Kuredu Island Resort doctor’s passport seized over initial spread of Covid-19

She had failed to inform authorities of a possible Covid-19 case, which led to the initial spread of Covid-19 in Maldives

The doctor is accused of risking the lives of others by withholding information regarding the case

Criminal Court issued the order

Criminal Court has issued an order to withhold the passport of the Kuredu Island Resort doctor.

While RaajjeMV has obtained a copy of the said order, it is over the doctor’s decision to allow an Italian tourist to depart the country despite exhibiting Covid-19 like symptoms. He is to have tested positive upon return to Italy.

This led to the first confirmed cases in the country, with two employees at Kuredu Island Resort contracting the virus; most number of cases were reported from the resort thus far; five.

While the said tourist is to have stayed in the capital for two days and traveled within the city, a criminal investigation was ordered over the matter.

As per the court order, the doctor is accused of risking the lives of others by withholding information of a possible Covid-19 case.

Noting that this led to the initial spread of Covid-19 in the Maldives, or the first confirmed cases in the country, the Criminal Court ordered to withhold her passport over fear of fleeing prior to the conclusion of investigation.

The doctor’s passport is to be held for a one-month period, until April 22.
