Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture, Zaha Waheed has revealed that only one fishing boat received the MVR10,000 allocated under the previous government's Fisherman Insurance Scheme.

The minister made the revelation in response to a question by MP for North Thinadhoo Abdul Mughnee during Monday's parliament sitting. When the MP asked how many fishing boats received allowances under the Fisherman Insurance Scheme known as 'Beyas Nubeyas', the minister responded that only one fishing vessel received the allocated MVR10,000.

Following the minister's answer, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed expressed interest in the specific name of the fishing boat alongside MP for Hoarafushi, Ahmed Saleem.

The minister did not disclose this information but did state that the boat belongs to Shaviyani atoll.

The 'Beyas Nubeyas' scheme was one of former President Yameen's campaign pledge during the 2013 presidential election. Under this scheme, all professional fishermen would receive a monthly income of at MVR 10,000; regardless of their yield.
