Jailed ex-president summoned to police for questioning over two additional cases

Jailed former President Abdulla Yameen has been summoned to the police, for investigations into additional two cases.

His defence attorney and former vice president, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed announced this via Twitter on Wednesday, adding that he is to be presented to police for questioning at 2pm on Thursday.

Accusing the police of “dancing to the beat of the government,” the former VP questioned “when will the country’s institutions be independent?”

Yameen was convicted on money-laundering charges on 28th November 2019, after being found guilty of laundering USD through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via a private company SoF, during his presidency. Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison, and fined USD five million to be paid within in six months.

While the police probes additional cases against the former president, his family has requested a transfer to house arrest over his declining health.

During an appeal hearing held at the High Court this Monday, where his team requested to release him on bail until the appeal process concludes. However, the court rejected the request.
