The Maldives opposition, the coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC), has called against issuing unconstitutional orders to police.
In a press statement released by the progressive coalition on Thursday, the opposition accused senior police officials of ordering officers to be brutal and use excessive force on civilians.
Hence, the opposition appealed for police to refrain from using excessive force when making arrests, adding that such behavior violates the authority's code of conduct.
Further, the opposition called for the resignation of Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, accusing them of issuing unlawful orders to police and allowing such orders to be enforced.
While the progressive coalition has accused the state of allowing police brutality, many have accused the leader of the progressive coalition, jailed former President Abdulla Yameen, of using the police force to carry out politically-motivated and unlawful arrests.
