FM Shahid revealed that the decision was made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on behalf of the people of the Maldives.

Maldives has gifted one million tuna cans to People’s Republic of China following the novel corona-virus outbreak originating from Wuhan City of the southeastern nation.

During a press conference held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday night, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid revealed that the decision was made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on behalf of the people of the Maldives.

Moreover, Shahid stated that the donation is a gesture of goodwill from the Maldivian people and government to the people of China as the southeastern nation is currently in the epicenter of the Novel Corona-virus crisis.

Highlighting China's transparency in sharing information regarding the outbreak, the minister stated that the Maldives government has full confidence in the Chinese people's ability to overcome the corona-virus crisis.

Further, he gave assurance of support from the Maldivian people and government in China's efforts to control the outbreak and expressed his appreciation for the Chinese government's assistance to the Maldivians currently residing in China.

Likewise, Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Zhang Lizhong expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Chinese people and government during a very difficult time for the southeastern nation.

He also noted that tuna is a daily necessity for Maldivians and that the donation is demonstrative of the support and understanding of the Maldives' government and people.

Emphasizing the Chinese government's commitment to curbing the outbreak, the ambassador stated that the Chinese government has mobilized the entire country to take safety measures.
