Maldives Police Service (MPS) has seized a number of drugs and alcohol being smuggled between islands via boat.

Authorities revealed that alcohol bottles being smuggled into Hinnavaru island of Lhaviyani atoll was seized during a special joint operation conducted by police intelligence and Hinnavaru police department. Similarly, a large number of drugs being smuggled into Makunudhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll were seized during a special joint operation conducted by police intelligence and Makunudhoo police department.

While both the drugs and alcohol were being smuggled via a boat, authorities searched the boats travelling from Male' city based on a tip-off. As such, ten alcohol bottles were found in a box on the boat travelling to Hinnavaru whereas one large rubber packer and one film cannister containing substances suspected to be drugs were found on the boat travelling to Makunudhoo.

Although no arrests have been made in either case, both cases are currently undergoing further investigation.
