Willing to resign if it guarantees zero sexual assault cases in the future: Shidhatha

Although there have been observable delays in taking action in previous cases, Shidhatha said that she believes action was swift in Thursday's case

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Shidhatha Shareef has asserted that she will hand in her resignation if there is a guarantee that no further cases of sexual assault will arise after her resignation.

Having visited the region where protesters took the streets on Majeedhee Magu on Friday evening, calling for the Gender Minister’s resignation, Shidhatha told press that she is more than willing to drop in her resignation if there is a guarantee that her resignation will result in the eradication of sexual assault cases.

I will resign right now if there is guarantee that no further sexual abuse cases will arise after my resignation”
Shidhatha

Further, the minister stated that there has been an increase in reported cases of sexual abuse because the public is more aware now.

She added that she believes that they will continue receiving more cases as public awareness continues to increase.

Shidhatha went on to assure the public that the ministry is carrying out a lot of work to take the adequate measures in every such case that surfaces.

Although there have been observable delays in taking action in previous cases, Shidhatha said that she believes action was swift in the case that was reported on Thursday, of sexual assault against a two-year-old.

As such, the child was provided protection less than two hours since it was reported, said the minister.
