All schools across the Maldives have opened with the commencement of the academic year 2020.
School sessions began on Sunday after a holiday that lasted over a month, and government officials traveled to various atolls to welcome the students to the new year.

Out of the 212, 150 are being held under the single-session module.

Late last year, the education ministry announced that the academic holidays with be divided into two periods from 2020. As such, school holidays for next year are scheduled for 31st May - 11th June and 6th December - 7th January.
The ministry said that the reason for this is because the academic holidays coincide with the country's peak season for tourism, which leads to challenges for those in the industry in joining their families for vacation.
