9 cases of child rights violations reported last month: Gender Ministry

Ministry of Gender, Family & Social Services has revealed that nine cases of child rights violations were reported last month.

According to the ministry's statistics, a total of 174 cases was reported to the ministry and attended to. These cases included 75 cases of child abuse in the month of November 2019 alone.

The ministry further disclosed that negligence cases were the most reported type of abuse in the past month with a total of 23 cases, followed closely by 21 physical abuse cases and 20 sexual abuse cases.

As such, a total of nine child rights violations were reported. Four children were refused access to education, two children were denied vaccinations with one child being denied access to healthcare.

Likewise, five cases of emotional abuse were reported alongside two victims of cyberbullying, two witnesses to domestic violence, and one case of commercial sexual exploitation as well as one case of exploitation.

Additionally, two cases of young offenders were reported with one child having been involved in physical assault.

As for children's behavioural problems, a total of ten cases were reported last month, including four run-away children and two perpetrators of bullying.

The statistics further showed a total of 29 domestic violence cases were reported; 24 victims were women and five victims were men. The highest number of reports were against physical violence with 14 cases, followed by five reports of emotional or verbal abuse. Reports against stalking, intimidation, negligence, financial abuse damage to property were also recorded.

Moreover, six cases of elder abuse were reported with 11 cases of abuse against persons with disabilities.

Furthermore, one case of children with suicidal behaviour was reported alongside one case of suicidal ideation.
