Court extends remand of parents of 13-yo child bride
Their remand was extended by 10 days
They were arrested on December 10
News of the pregnant child bride broke out after her rapist was attacked by a crew member of the sea-cucumber fishing boat he worked on

Criminal Court has extended the remand of the parents of the 13-year-old child bride from Maduvvari island.

Their remand was extended by 10 days.

The news of the pregnant child bride broke out in late November, after her rapist was attacked by a crew member of the sea-cucumber fishing boat he worked on. Both the rapist and his attacker are in police custody.

The girl’s parents, a 36-year-old woman and 46-year-old man, were arrested on December 10, over negligence.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) said that a total of six children have been taken under state care, following an investigation into a family with extremist ideologies, stripping their children’s rights as well as refusing to vaccinate them among many other complaints of negligence.

While the 13-year-old has given birth this year, DNA tests confirmed that the baby is her rapist’s.

Authorities have since launched a special operation on the island, over the rise of religious extremism.
