Court extends remand of Hammaadh's attacker

Asif was arrested two days later; his remand has been extended by 10 days
Hammaadh is also in police custody, over the 13-year-old child bride case that emerged following his attack

Criminal Court has extended the remand of the man that attacked Ismail Hammaadh in Maduvvari island.

Ismail Asif’s remand was extended by 10 days on Saturday.

While Hammaadh was attacked on a sea-cucumber fishing boat outside of Maalhos island in Alif Alif atoll on November 21, 30-year-old Asif was arrested two days later.

He has since confessed to attacking the 26-year-old, while police have recovered the weapon.

Asif is accused of violence with a sharp object and has been remanded under Article 60 (b) of the Criminal Procedure Act.

While the attacker is one of the victim's crew mates, a third person was onboard at the time who according to the police was asleep at the time of the attack. Noting that this person has no involvement in the crime, police added that this is corroborated through Asif’s statement.

Hammaadh was discharged from hospital on November 30, and subsequently arrested over the 13-year-old child bride case that emerged following his attack. Hammaadh is to have married the girl “out of court” and she has since given birth. A DNA test has proven that the baby is his.
